Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize

President Barack Obama was awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday.

Just added: He won it for his efforts in promoting worldwide cooperation and peace. President Obama is the 3rd sitting President to have won the award.

Obama wins 2009 Nobel Peace Prize

OSLO — President Barack Obama on Friday won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," the Norwegian Nobel Committee said.

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said. "His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

Obama's name had been mentioned in speculation before the award but many Nobel watchers believed it was too early to award the president.

The committee said it attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

"Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play."

I voted for the guy Obama! I am not impressed with anything that our government does however ~grins~. I have voted for Bush Senior, Bill Clinton, Bush Jr, Kerry and Obama...I didn't think Al Gore would have made a good president! ~smiles~

Obama hasn't done jack to win the Nobel Peace Prize....I mean look at the company he keeps: Mother Theresea, Dali Lama, Martin Luther King Jr.....I don't think Al Gore should have one it, but maybe JFK ~smiles~.

Obama has written a couple books and blathered on about peace, I think the real reason he made it is because he instilled enough peace in our nation to allow a black korean man to become president ~chuckles~, becaue he really hasn't dedicated his life to peace despite his efforts in community services ~smiles~.

Of course I think the Nobel Peace Prize is just a pile of #### and when we have peace in this world, then give it to the guy who brought it about!!! ~grins~ and then those who keep it! ~chuckles~

I don't agree that the prize is a pile of ####, it is at least an inspiration and acknowledgment. It sets a bar and example for future achievers. But the man it's named after did invent dynamite after all.

I do agree that if the prize is awarded based upon actions then it has been awarded prematurely in Obama's case. But that does not preclude the prize committee from changing the requirement that the prize be awarded based upon hope for future actions. At least as far as I know; I don't know what the guidelines for awarding it are.

I also believe that in order to bring about peace that sometimes harsher actions must occur first. It goes back to that "there-is-no-light-without-dark" thing. Or the Yin and the Yang of things.

Still can't figure it out. Why? What did he did to promote peace? ReallY? Not rhetoric, not words, not plans...what has he done?
