How many humans could be sustained on the Earth if we lived a hunting-gathering

O.k, if we reverted to a hunting and gathering lifestyle on the Earth, what would be the maximum amount of humans the Earth could sustain? In other words, let'sd say in a lush area, how many square muiles does it take to feed one person?

I have no idea what a reasonable answer would be but there are many indigenous tribes that would experience no change in their way of life.

One less than the number of humans that it would take to make the animal population they depend upon start to decline! :)

I guess it would depend on what you ate and how often. I've seen docs of pygmies hunting elephants. I don't think they hunt them very often and they take care to eat all of the animal. They are also very small people.
The earth appears to be getting drier with the climate getting warmer which is not good for food production either natural or man-made. People would have to change their ideas about personal privacy and possessions to live communily under dry conditions. Here is an interesting study of hunter/gatherers in Africa. They live very close together and in the open. They build huts to story food. I'd guess that they live close to each other so as to take up as little land as possible for themselves. That would make more land available for the plants and animals they eat.
The article says that the Am. Pub. Health Assc. has established 350 sq.ft. per person as a minimum standard while those Africans live with 188 sq. ft./ person.

I can imagine that most people who live on a basic survival level would not put up with the space and dietary demands a lot of modern people have.

Can we eat other humans? ~grins~

He who is slow to believe in anything and everything is of great understanding, for the belief in a single false principle is the begining of all unwisdom.

Well, it has been done before so I guess we can. The question is: "Would you?"

If it meant living or dying, I would! (that's if they died of natural causes first)

What? You wouldn't consider a .38 round to the head a natural cause?

hmmm...we're still Hunter/ Gatherers. .....We've just learned to produce what we hunt and gather
