Quite simply, Mark, the next time you pick up the paper or turn on the news and see a photo of a child molester, mass murderer, rapist, ect...there's your perfect picture of a demon.

Not if "demon" is referring to a motivating, inspirational genius, which is the original sense of the word.

Sorry those are just plain old people. As much as we try to separate ourselves from them. Child molestors, rapists, murderers. They're just people like everybody else. You can call them demons, monsters, or sociopath (which is pyschologese for demons and monsters), but in the end they're still just human beings.

My apologies, Shoeman. I have never heard that definition, especially as the original sense of the word. The closest I know of is the word "daemon which is the Latin form of the Greek "daimon" and simply meant a supernatural entity that could be either good or bad. I tend to go with this meaning personally. A daemon is no different than many of the other elemental beings. I have never, in any of my studies, heard it defined as an "inspirational genius". I suppose a Christian might say that it could be so if the motivation and inspiration was geared toward what they, as a religion, consider evil.

Your definition of the word more reminds me of the definition of a muse which in Greek mythology were spirits or Goddeses who inspire creation in things like music, writing and art.

As I am a Wiccan, I do not believe in demons in the classical sense leaning more toward believing that they, as most people accept them, were simply cop outs of the Christian church in order to have something to shrug responsibility of one's own actions.

My response to the post was a tongue and cheek comment using the classical definition of the word appealing to a general mindset. If that offended you, I apologize.

However I would like to make one important point. After working around and supervising such degenerates as I mentioned originally in the post for over 20 years, I can tell you with all honesty that they are definately NOT "just people" . Whether it be caused from mental illness, a fall on the head, too much booze, wine, drugs, porn, or whatever the latest scapegoat (yep modern society and the secular world has scapegoats too) culture wants to pin the action on, "just people" or normal people don't molest and rape four year olds. The average citizen doesn't go off on a killing spree or whatever. They are definately not just plain old people like everyone else. Society doesn't seperate itself from them. They seperate themselves from society by going outside of the norm in a vile, disgusting manner. We may, as humans, have a basic animal nature, yet even a wolf does not kill for pleasure. A lion does not slaughter it's entire pride. Animals kill to survive whether it be for food, or self defense, or to secure the appropriate females of the species for procreation. I'm from Colorado. I don't see a lot of bull elk taking a yearling behind a stand of trees and molesting it. I've never seen a coyote take a pup and rut with it. The pup can't reproduce yet.

So these people may not be demons in the classical sense of the word, but they are not typical, normal, well adjusted human beings. They are not even animals acting in accordance with the base instincts of any other animal species.

Curiously, I can't find my source for the definition, but its something that I've heard before and that has kicked around in my head. Even so, the most I can find on "daemons/daimons" (aside from good or evil beings) pertains to beings between gods and humans.

Perhaps this debate would be better suited to somewhere else, so I won't go on too much longer. But these people are people. They're the lowest form of human being, even the lowest form of animal ("Low" by what I perceive to be most people's ethical standards). They're not well adjusted and have problems. Serious problems. But that doesn't mean that they aren't people. People tend to dehumanize them, try and make as if "normal people" have no relation to "them."

I see this is as a mistake, a way of cleaning up the image of humanity. Sweeping the dirty parts into prisons and mental hospitals where they can't be seen or thought of. They belong penned up. I think plenty of them deserve worse. I just don't think that they should be thought of in the way that they are.

Oh I have no intention or desire to debate the issue. It is your right to believe what you wish. I simply disagree with the original definition of the word as you used it in the post and the cassification of degenerates as "just normal humans".

Debates are meaningless when two people are secure in what they believe. They simply go around in circles, aggravate both parties, and usually end up no closer to an agreement or answer than there was in the first place.

Well said once again Phoenix. I could say many things about this post, you know this personally, but thats not for here. But they are in NO way "normal" human beings. I believe some humans were born with evil inside them. Not demonic evil, just plain evil. Again, well said dear!
